Roda reports to UNHCHR on human rights in maternity care

In September 2016 the United Nations Human Rights Council adopted Resolution 33/18 entitled "Preventable maternal mortality and morbidity and human rights" (available in all six official languages of the UN here). Among other things, the Resolation urges all States “to take action at all levels, utilizing a comprehensive human rights based approach, to address the interlinked root causes of maternal mortality and morbidity."

The Resolution also requests the High Commissioner for Human Rights (UNHCHR) to prepare a report “good practices and challenges in the application of a human rights-based approach to the elimination of preventable maternal mortality and morbidity, including through the utilization of the technical guidance,” to be presented to the Human Rights Council at its thirty-ninth session (planned for September 2019).

In order to prepare this report, the Office of the UNHCHR requested information from Governments and Organisations on how human rights approaches have been utilised to prevent maternal mortality and morbidity, and about how Technical Guidance A/HRC/21/22 was utilised in-country. Roda participated in this public consultation, and sent its report on 01 February 2018.

Roda's report includes information on human rights issues present in reproductive healthcare in Croatia, including medically assisted reproduction services, maternity care, access to infants after birth and barriers to accessing midwifery care in Croatia. Roda's report and the request by the UNHCHR can be found below.
