Project description
MOMental is an international Erasmus project focused on strengthening support for the mental health of pregnant women and mothers living in various crisis contexts – ranging from war and displacement to economic and climate crises. Such situations place additional strain on health systems, increase risks to the mental health of pregnant women and mothers, and reduce access to quality care. Although the importance of perinatal mental health is well documented, it remains insufficiently integrated into education programmes, care protocols, and support systems. Midwives, counsellors, educators, and other care providers are often on the front line, but without adequate resources or tailored training for work in crisis settings.
MOMental brings together organisations from four countries to jointly advance knowledge, develop guidelines, and build and/or strengthen capacities to provide appropriate support to women and families in challenging environments. The project combines public health approaches, adult education, and practice-based experience, laying the groundwork for long-term improvements in perinatal care.
Objectives
The objectives of the project are to:
-
strengthen the capacities of partner organisations to support perinatal mental health in crisis situations,
-
develop evidence-based guidelines for care providers working in diverse crisis contexts,
-
develop an innovative Train-the-Trainer programme for the education of trainers,
-
improve access to high-quality educational content on perinatal mental health in multiple languages,
-
foster cooperation between health professionals, civil society organisations, and policymakers.
Activities
The project includes:
- Development of Guidelines
Mapping practices, needs assessment, and the development of comprehensive guidelines for working with pregnant women and mothers in crisis settings. - Train-the-Trainer programme
A structured learning programme designed for midwives, educators, breastfeeding counsellors, and other care providers. - Development of a digital Learning Hub platform
The platform will host video materials, self-assessment tools, and interactive modules, available in multiple languages. - National and international dissemination
Presentation of results to professionals, institutions, and policymakers in the partner countries.
